ANOTHER GEMULAH EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH NIGERIAN SONG WRITER, TEACHER FASHION HEAD, Pro-VERB

Latest Interview :

Pro-VERB whose real name is Proverb T. Lawal is a musician , a fashion designer and a teacher.
He hails from Lagos state and he is the first of 5 kids.
Pro-VERB does not have a sexually transmitted disease as you may want to perceive but he has a STD way of life and how he delivers his message to the world, Pro-VERB's STD personae.
Pro-VERB's "S" singing it, Pro-VERB is posed by his God given nature to impart this generation with his music,
He can perform almost all genres of music namely Rock, Pop, R 'n' B, Rap, soul rock, a lot more and the striking factor about this enigma is that he has a message that would challenge the listener as well as appeal to the truth....
He is about to relaunch his career and he is telling Damilola Parkinson(@Intl_Parkinson) of Gemulah Entertainment all about it.

G.E 9JA : It is nice to have you right here and Gemulah9ja  and we appreciate your welcoming us into O.M.E studios,  please we would like you to tell people who Pro-VERB is?

Pro-VERB : My real name is Proverb T. Lawal, I am a song writer, composer, producer, musician, teacher , and fashionista , I am a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University Of technology, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Nigeria, I studied Pure and Applied Mathematics and I am just that simple guy who expresses himself through S.T.D ?

G.E 9JA : What do you mean when you say S.T.D ?

Pro-VERB : People think I am referring to some sexually transmitted disease but what S.T.D really mean are the three ways I express my message , which are "S" which stands for "Sing it", "T" for "Teach It" and  "D" for "Dress It" because these are the best ways to create the divine you and imbibe positive principles into yourself.

G.E 9JA : How did you come about your Stage name?

Pro-VERB : Proverb is my real name , I just had to hyphenate it to Pro-VERB because Pro means before,  drive, push, inspire, direct, to insight and enlighten, it is the event, or experience before the VERB which means actions or process that leads to achievement/transformation. That makes me the Drive and the Process that leads to transformation .

G.E 9JA : Your source of inspiration and motivation?

Pro-VERB : Though nature whispers music into the minds of great musicians but shouts it into my mind , that I have to relieve myself by recording it. My inspiration comes from the deepest wisdom, the highest truth, my grandest experience, everything and nothing.

G.E 9JA : Whom would  you say is your role model and why did you choose them?

Pro-VERB : God is my role model, because the son of a lion is a lion and I would say the son of God is a god , I would love to be like my father.

G.E 9JA : We also gathered from your Facebook Fan Page that you were going to dedicate a song to a young man who lost his life in service of Nigeria?

Pro-VERB : Although I am not through with the song but I will give you the sketch and I would like to hear peoples reaction to the song also , as it has become a thing of hurt to me that young people have to lose their lives in service of their fatherland and it is waived away as if it should not be an issue that should be discussed in parliament.

And you can also download it  right here : https://www.box.com/s/481x0gra3abaf4e0efxg

G.E 9JA : We also heard that you will be dropping a single soon, want to shed more light on that?

Pro-VERB : Yes I will be dropping my newest single on the 19th of April titled "NAIJA" but it would only be a preview as I am looking to fully release the track among the young generation and I am looking at dropping it by having a live performance of the song at a juvenile center or probably an orphanage , it is all up to my management team (My Ogas At The Top ... Pro-VERB laughs ) to communicate the final decisions of the label.

G.E 9JA : Any album(s) dropping this year?

Pro-VERB : I can not say at the moment for it is our dream to take the message to all schools and youth institutions all over the country and motivate them to making a decision to push for the positive changes for this nation Naija (Nigeria) and also take a stand to live a better life and create a better future for the next generation.

G.E 9JA : Any last words?

Pro-VERB : Out of the night that covers us, black as the pit from pole to pole , I thank whatever gods may be, for our unconquerable souls. It matters not how strait the gate , how charged the punishments the scroll, we are the masters of our fate, we are the captain of our souls. We must create change in NAIJA  (Nigeria). Me and You.

The truth about our private jet, by P-square

The truth about our private jet, by P-square

They are ever busy, taking their music around the continent where they are arguably the most popular act from Nigeria. Peter Okoye, one-half of the energetic choreographers and twin singers, P-Square, spoke to VICTOR AKANDE, Entertainment Editor, recently.

HOW do you feel that your latest single, Alingo, has been banned?

I heard of the ban, but, honestly, reasons for the ban were not specified. But what we have noticed and they haven’t is that when you ban a song you only make it popular. Banning a song on Nigerian channels doesn’t mean much because the major international channels still play the videos.

What really was the reason behind the video?

For a few years now P-square haven’t made a dance video and our fans have been anticipating, so we just decided to give them that. Alingo was a freestyle that we did even before the Invasion album; we never took it serious until it leaked, and we got good responses. Thus, we decided to shoot a video for it.

Did you have to take the recording abroad again like most of your works?

Surprisingly, no! The scenes were created and shot in an abandoned warehouse close to our home in Nigeria. It took a lot of time and energy though, because it has been five years since we did a dance video, the last which was Roll It.

How far have you gone with foreign collaborations, considering that it’s the fastest way to hit the European and American markets?

Let’s look at it this way. We have known Akon for over six years, but we didn’t have talks for collaboration, till he came to our concert in London and witnessed the reception. He was trying to open Kon Life in Africa and was looking for people to help him run it, so we teamed up in what we call a joint venture. We are establishing an office in Nigeria called Kon Life, because we are here representing him while he is out in the states representing us. So, all I can say is that the process is on. Just watch out.

Which country would you say is your biggest market in Africa?

East Africa is the biggest encouragement, a certain place to run to at any time. Southern Africa is a potential market; that is, it is still in the works because we have been working there for over a year. But a profitable market is based on an entertainer’s personal effort, because an area can’t remain hot for us every time, so we are exploring new grounds.

You are always on the road, how much time do you have for yourselves?

We try as much as possible, but we don’t get as much time as we would want. But we took the whole of January this year to rest, because last year was a very busy year for us. However, we are back on the road again. It is the nature of the business, and we are hoping for a 2013 that will be better than last year, because this year we are including the tour of United States in our schedule.

What is this rumour about you guys acquiring a private jet; can you confirm it?

It’s not true my brother. We had a deal with a private jet company, which provides that whenever we are going to a specific place, we would be provided a jet. That way, they always gave us their private jets to travel with. This makes our trips easier. On the other hand, we are close to the presidents of most African countries, so when they hear that we are coming to their country, they usually send their private jets to pick us wherever we are. But that is not to say we can’t acquire our own jet. As a matter of fact, we are planning to get ours.

How have you been able to live above the scourge of piracy, which most artistes say is the reason they have not been able to make headway?

Piracy affects all of us, but still P-square as a brand has managed to strive and be successful. The truth is that we know how to make money even from the pirates. Some of the marketers are the pirates that we are talking about, as a result, fighting piracy starts with them. We know our worth, so before a marketer buys our album, we make him provide the cost of production and profit margin. Our last album took the joint effort of three different marketers to buy.

Despite being blood brothers, are you (P-Square) likely to go your separate ways someday?

Peter and Paul are not perfect; we quarrel like normal siblings do, but we don’t let it affect our business. Even with Jude our brother, in business, he is our manager and he respects us as the artistes he manages, but when it comes to family matters, he is our elder brother and we give him that respect. Only our late mum had the power to make us split and she wouldn’t have done that. So, if there is to be a split, it will not be as a result of quarrel, but on mutual ground. Group splits are not out of place, but our blood ties keep us strong and our background won’t even allow us split. We understand each other very well.

Talking about your background, how was growing up with Paul like?

(Smiles)I was very stubborn as a child, but Paul ended up paying for my atrocities, as people often mistook him for me. We grew up doing things together and we still do. We have our mum to thank for this. I try to like what he likes and he does same, but in a situation whereby he feels differently, I just let go. We have been united from birth and we still are.

How has life been without your mother?

It’s been hectic. We haven’t sat down to do an album because she was usually there with us in the studio. As a pastor that she was, she used to pray on everything we do and even pray on our album a week before it was released. We don’t know how we will do it this time, but we hope for the best.

After doing the same thing over a long period, do you ever feel like exploring other avenues?

For P-square, music has become a part of us, but since we understand the pattern and are used to it we have started looking into other means of making money. But we also understand that making so much money and storing it is not wise, we have decided to go into various businesses; one of which is real estate business. This, we have been doing for a long time. We do businesses that we can get people to run for us without fear. We are also about to enter into oil and gas business.

They say you guys are arrogant…

Paul and I have two different personalities, so you cannot use the attitude of one to judge the group. I don’t expect all news about me to be positive. Paul, for example, waits for major events before being in the news, but I am more controversial. Our intimidating nature makes us look arrogant, but it’s really not like that.
Your brother, Jude Okoye (Engees), was quoted as saying he won’t produce any other artiste but P-Square
There was an interview where he was asked that question and I think he said it as a joke. Apart from that, Jude has a lot of businesses he’s into, so signing artistes is not really a priority for him. He keeps his interests on P-Square because outsiders might not understand the way he does his things, so he doesn’t want distractions.

Grooming The Next Generation Of Advertising Leaders, By Jimi Awosika

Insight Communications MD, Mr. Jimi Awosika Photo: Insight
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen.
………………………………………………………………..
Listen to Bon Jovi:
‘Is it just me or does anybody see
The new improved tomorrow isn’t what it used to be
Yesterday keeps comin’ ‘round, it’s just reality
It’s the same damn song with different melody
The market keeps on crashing’

Tattered jeans are back in fashion
‘Steady of records, now it’s MP3s
I tell you one more time with feeling
Even though this world is reeling
You’re still you and I’m still me
I didn’t mean to cause a scene
I didn’t mean to cause a scene
But I guess it’s time to roll up our sleeve
……………………………………………………………………….
‘The more things change, the more they stay the same’

Lyrics from Bon Jovi: THE MORE THINGS CHANGE
So, in contemplating the purpose of this gathering as a celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Cannes Lion, my heart is stirred into the frame of homily.
Not to pontificate, but to ruminate on my thirty six years of practice in our beloved profession; Marketing Communication.
And so today, I think about the Biodun Shobanjos, the Banjo Solarus, the Ted Mukoros amongst other great mentors and industry leaders.
These are some of the great people I observed, or to put it more correctly, I studied as they elevated a then relatively unknown profession in these parts into a respectable and valuable one that has brought fame and fortune to a long list of advertisers and practitioners.
Such mentors infected us with the appeal and passion for the advertising industry as it was then called.
So in the context and purpose of today’s event’ I am inevitable led to think:
What challenges must we be giving to them?
What should we be telling them?

I am here to talk about ‘Grooming the Next Generation of industry leaders’; a subject that elicits the imperative of our existence as human beings. It compels us to appreciate that what any preceding generation must do is to prepare the coming generation for the challenges of tomorrow.
It’s about the dynamics of parenting the progeny as captured in the old ad slogan:
‘You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.’
This readily brings to my mind the motivation that led us at Insight Communications to establish the first programme that was designed to develop Graduate Trainee for Leadership of the industry.
Today it is the humbling fact that an enviable percentage of leaders of top Marketing Communication companies in Nigeria are alumni of this programme which began in 1990.

Engagement
Here, I would like to address the need for us to engage a strategy that would raise what I call the pride quotient in our profession. The Pride Quotient that young leaders have for our profession must be maintained at a very high degree because today’s young generation; more than that preceding them has been so incredibly empowered by both technological advancement and liberal world view.
So they have become very ambitious about ‘making a dent in the universe’. And that’s why far beyond being simple seen as people who work to ‘put food on the table’, we must make the Next Gen realize that they are crucial to sustaining the world’s socio-economic ecosystem.
They must be made to see that as practitioners, they are actually modulators of culture; trendsetters who craft the narrative of development of products that continuously improve the quality of life consumers. This gives us all our identity strength.
After all, creating appeal for products, services and causes should come naturally to us as practitioners of Marketing Communication, since creating appeal for client’s brands in the hearts of the consumers is our Job 1.
Physicians heal thyself; you’d say!
We must make the profession cool. Generation Yers consider something cool when it is attractive to them. Here cool stands for trendy, high status, successful, creative, fun, contemporary.
In this regard, it is created by the work we do, so when we commit to doing great work that young people love, they ‘d love to be part of the profession that does such work. We see therefore that we must commit to very high standards of creativity. And this is why I commend the effort of Chini to provide the opportunity of the Cannes Lion platform so that young people can access and be inspired by the very best of creativity in the world. Story telling session is a must.  My position is that we should invite our successful veterans to tell their stories APCON, AAAN and Chini must collaborate on this forum with a tentative name being ‘Hand over Notes’
Education:
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are in the brain race where knowledge resources such as know-how are expertise are critical as other economic resources. The advertising business is a spin.
So isn’t it a danger that our ads are still so generic?
As the world is now fully entrenched in the ideas economy, the imperative for instant education; that is education that is relevant to proving solutions to ever emerging challenges in real time is indeed.
Today is the day of the Artist. And Artist here means anyone-Copywriter, Engineer, Chef, the Artiste as we know them traditionally, et cetera-who matches insight with courage to change the status quo.
For what can you say about the phenomenon in which Clients are finding their creative sources in musicians and designers?
Will.i.am is Director of Creative Innovation for Intel.
Alicia keys is Creative Director for Blackberry
Lady Gaga is Creative Director for Polaroid.
Marc Jacobs is Creative Director for Diet Coke.
And if all this sounds too far out, then watch out for a brand near you. Don Jazzy has signed a contract to design Samsung music system for Africa.
This new trend is having these creative artistes replace most of the roles that agency creative and creative producers played in the past.
A cursory investigation into this trend will reveal that these companies believe that these artistes enable their brands to talk to new audiences by driving engagement and positive, authentic perceptions.
And as Clients are beginning to see value in the idea of baking marketing and marketing communication into the design of their products and services, the role of the agency creative will continue to dwindle, if we don’t change the current model of how we train our people.
As you can see therefore, the new competition is not really between Agencies but between creative sources. We must expose and educate our young professionals to be able to lead Client in new thinking and practices of global dimensions.
We have to retain the upcoming advertising people in the new skills and attitudes possessed by these new creative that makes them adept at mining popular culture for insights which enable them to design communication solutions that build authentic connections with consumers.
Our next generation of leaders must see that today, the world is their stage; and at their feet.
After all, creativity is creativity.
We must realize that we are not the only repositories of knowledge and skills of effective communication and so we must equip our upcoming leaders with future-proof and competitive training.
This is the mindset that made an Amos Tutuola trained Blacksmith and T.M Aluko, a trained Engineer who stand peer-to-peer with the Chinua Achebes and Wole Soyinkas who were trained as writers.
So it is not about the profession that you are trained for. It is about an adaptive mindset and relevant retraining.
We need leaders who are adept in leading thought that finds solutions that resonate with today’s distracted consumer in the ever-fragmenting media landscape.
This is how the new ad agencies should be thinking.
The developments that have changed the dynamics of communication and social relationships; lead me to propose that we are no longer Marketing Communications Practitioners but Marketing Conversation Practitioners.
It is a paradigm that we must embrace; if we are to be relevant to today’s connected and incredibly aware and aware and empowered generation.
We must accept chaos as the new normal as the advertising business continues forever in a spin.
This is why I call for a mind shift that takes consideration of this new thinking where our young people are taught the way to see through the chaos to sift patterns that lead them into insights for making coherence out of disparate tendencies.
Insight is forever key; as solutions will always be derived out of insight and understanding.
Again remember Bon Jovi. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Inherent in this notion is the promise of business sustainability, in addition to satisfying the existential sentiment of making meaning out of our long lives spent in work.
We need to build our tomorrow now.
MOTIVATION
We should challenge our young colleagues to see immeasurable opportunity that awaits anyone who steps forward to offer the way out of the chaos. For this is what a leader means in essence-anyone who steps forward to confront a challenge and shows the way out for others to follow.
This presupposes the need for an emphasis on intelligence of a new kind; if we are to win the war of attrition that is buffeting our profession from all comers.
Again, take the case of the blogger for example. A blogger could have more followers than all the national media channels combined. That’s a one-person publishing conglomerate, whose infrastructure is a brain and a computer. Or even a tablet or phone. See what that means for your media revenue
The new intelligence that we need to engage should rather read ‘in-telligence’- the kind that soldiers employ to learn about the position at which the enemy is vulnerable.
This is the kind of motivation that we should be giving our  next generation.
In Naija terms, we can call the first module “Shine Your Eye 101”
At this celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Lions let me pass my congratulation through Chini to the great minds behind the institution that the Cannes Lions has come to be.
Let me congratulate Chini for stepping forward to bring the benefits that Cannes Lions provides for our industry and country.
Ladies and gentlemen, we stand at a place of immense opportunity, to provide solutions for Clients who are daily confronted by the challenges that have placed businesses in a spin.
We must meet this challenge by engaging, educating and motivating our upcoming generation for leadership so that they can take the helm in doing what the world needs us for-that is improving the quality of life and living as we connect the producers of good and services with consumers

Kim Kardashian Tweet : VERY FAKE!!!!

Latest Gist

The last time Kim Kardashian trended in Nigeria was when she made her first visit to the country for Darey’s valentine concert in February. A month later, she’s burning up the social trend list in Nigeria over a ‘tweet’ which seemed to have erupted a lot of discomfort among Nigerians.

How dangerous can 140 characters be? Well, when Kim K allegedly tweeted that ‘Nigeria is such a disgusting country. I couldn’t wait to leave. lol Scott said their women look like apes and I agree’.

Although the tweet was fake, ‘photoshopped’ by a certain @chuckicheese, it went viral in minutes with Nigerians reacting- expectedly – negatively to it. The scenario became that serious and some blogs actually fell for the expensive joke.

‘Funniest s**t, I ALWAYS use @BET for my fake retweets but people still fall for it‘, @chuckicheese wrote on his Twitter last night.

Nigerian rapper 2shotz was one of the many Nigerians who also fell for it. ‘F**k kim kardarshian…..how wld she say such about naija girls?‘, he wrote on his Twitter page.

Another fake tweet seemed to have convinced Nigerians that it was all a prank. ‘I wld av replied Nigerians but i don’t want to say anything and my oga at the top would say another thing‘, the second fake tweet read, borrowing from the recent ‘Oga at the top’ parodies.

Kim K however didn’t seem fazed, exchanging pleasant tweets with her sister all through the time she was trending in Nigeria

Illuminati: Kanye West New Album Title ”I AM GOD”

Kanye West is known for making shocking and controversial headlines with the decisions he makes, but if this rumor is true and Kanye West goes through with it, this could take the cake for the most controversial thing he has done so far in his career.

According to BBC in an article about what Kanye West and Kim Kardashian might name their first born child, it was revealed that Kanye is contemplating naming his upcoming album I Am God.
Mixed emotions greet reports that Kanye West is considering calling his first child North. It’s a good joke, from a slightly unexpected source (neither the rapper nor his possibly even more famous partner, Kim Kardashian, are best known for their self-deprecating sallies, although the title Kanye is supposed to be contemplating for his new album, I Am God, is said to be “half tongue-in-cheek”).
Rumored titles for Kanye‘s upcoming album have been Black American Psycho, Rich Black American and a combination of the two–Rich Black American Psycho, but if Kanye goes through with it the project might now be titled I Am God.
Kanye West made headlines back in 2006 when he appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone wearing a crown of thorns, covered in blood dressed as Jesus Christ on the cross. That was controversial at the time, but this just might one up that.
If Kanye really titles his new album I Am God, people will surely react to it. Religious buffs, Fox News and Illuminati conspiracy theorists would have a ball. Make no mistake about it.

Nollywood Actress, Kate Henshaw who has being in the industry for a long time and still waxing strong in a recent interview speaks on issues in the movie industry, her personal life, among other issues.
Excerpts

What inspired your new dreadlocks hairstyle?

It’s not dreadlocks, I keep explaining to people. These are natural twists. On my last birthday, I decided to make a lot of changes in my life. I decided to reclaim my hair because I really had lovely hair growing up, and the first time relaxer ever touched my hair was when I was in the university.

After years of using too much chemical on it, I decided to just make a complete turnaround. Now, my hair is healthy, it’s long, it’s lovely. And I would never let relaxer touch it again. I don’t fix artificial nails again. I’m back to natural nails. I just put on some long-lasting polish. I fixed my nails for over 10 years but I’m tired of it now. I want to be healthy in my old age.

Your divorce came as a shock to a lot of people. Why did you take that decision?

Shock? Have you not heard that Seal and Heidi (Klum) have divorced? Haven’t you seen people who have been married for 20 to 25 years and divorced? I’m not perfect; no one is. We all have our low moments. It doesn’t mean I’m a failure.
Everybody goes through bad patches in life. Life must go on, whether we like it or not. It’s always better to part under good circumstances than for someone to be in jail, or die, or to be hurling insults at each other. There is no need for that.

It seems you don’t regret your divorce, because you always have this cheerful look?

It’s God. Looking back at my life, where I came from, I never even thought I would be an actress. I never even thought I would have an opportunity to meet people, to be a role mode. So, it’s not for me to feel self-pity.
I’m grateful to God every single day. I choose to be happy. I am a happy person. Someone encouraged me with these words yesterday: ‘Every problem you have will resolve and dissolve’.
So, my divorce is not the end of life and my God has given me cheer and joy. That explains why I am always happy and cheerful. No regrets.

Will you remarry?

I am not sure about remarrying but I will love again. I’m a lover, not a fighter. I’m only going to be very choosy. I don’t know about marriage, but, maybe, love.

You’ve kept your daughter away from the limelight. Is this deliberate?

Yes. You want them to kidnap my daughter? When they see her picture, then they will know who she is. I remember somebody sent a card to me through her school and I was so surprised.
They just dropped it on her desk and I was wondering how the person knew my daughter attends that school. Should she decide to step into the limelight later on, that would be her call, not mine. I’ve managed to keep her away and I’m sure I’ve done a good job. Now she is not even in the country and it’s better she schools there.
